One of the principal attractions of the Mexican Highlands is the annual migration of the monarch butterfly, one of the most spectacular gifts of nature. Every year millions of butterflies travel all the way from Canada to the oyamel forests in Michoacán, in central western Mexico, in a trip that takes more than 2,500 miles. The butterflies spend the winter in groups inside small areas at the Biosphere Reserve of the Monarch Butterflies which is a national protected area and natural reserve that covers more than 300 square miles.

As part of the celebration of the San Antonio’s Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival and to honor the great importance of the pollination and ecosystem services the butterflies provide, especially here in Texas and on their journey, the Mexican Cultural Institute will feature the works of Ignacio Arcas.  Arcas, a nature photographer with expertise specifically in migratory species, will delight our visitors with his work developed in Michoacán, México.

The Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival at Pearl, organized by the Texas Butterfly Ranch, will take place October 20 – 22 during peak Monarch butterfly migration week in San Antonio.

The Festival will celebrate the majesty of the Monarch butterfly migration and the insect pollinators that make one of every three bites of food we eat possible.

It also hopes call attention to San Antonio’s unique geographic location on the Monarch flyway in the strategic Texas Funnel, its status as America’s first Monarch Champion City (so named by the National Wildlife Federation), the interconnectedness of our world, and San Antonio’s special relationship with Mexico.

The BUEN VIAJE, MARIPOSA MONARCA! / HAVE A NICE TRIP, MONARCH BUTTERFLY! and COLLECTION PINEDA COVALIN exhibitions, FROM WHERE THE BUTTERFLIES GO installation, as well as a Conversation with Festival organizer Monika Maeckle of the Texas Butterfly Ranch, PhD. Cuauhtémoc Sáenz-Romero from the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo and Ignacio Arcas ‘WELCOME TO SAN ANTONIO’ are organized by the Mexican Cultural Institute San Antonio with the support of the Consulate of Mexico in San Antonio and the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
